What kitchen cabinet designs are popular?

Kitchens used to be separate from the rest of the home. Now, with open-concept living, the kitchen has become the hub of the home. With that in mind, homeowners are looking to make a design statement with their kitchen while still keeping maximum functionality.

From rustic to traditional to contemporary, there’s a cabinet style to suit any design. Let’s take a look at some of the trends that are going to stick around for a while.

Design trends

With all of the options out there, no one has to settle for builder’s grade styles anymore. As open and bright kitchens take over design trends, here’s a few of the options designers are using to accomplish that look.

  • Open shelving: Traditionally, drawers and cabinets hid all of our kitchen supplies. Whether you’re looking for a more industrial look of that classic farmhouse, open shelving can give you that minimalist look.
  • Open frame doors: If you’re looking to show off your china or want the illusion of more open space, the glass panels of open frame doors are a great option.
  • Shaker cabinets: Shaker cabinets have simple, sleek lines that give the cabinets a timelessly modern look. They’re a great foil for a strong color or busy backsplash.
  • Slab door cabinets: For the true minimalist, you can’t beat the incredible modern slab door. Typically seen in a glossy finish or a wood finish, they offer an uninterrupted flow between cabinets.

Color trends

In years past, stained wood cabinets could be found in nearly every kitchen. That’s not the case as people are indulging in color and natural finishes.

  • Blue: Blue is one of the most popular colors of the year, and that's no exception for kitchen cabinets. Found frequently in nature, subtle shades of blue are quickly becoming a new neutral. Add a more homey feel to your kitchen with shades varying from a rich navy to gray-based blues
  • White: White cabinets can be everything from modern and sleek to farmhouse classic. They pair well with many popular styles and can open up and brighten your space.
  • Two-toned: Can’t quite make up your mind? Or are you looking to add custom design flair to your space? Two-toned cabinets are your answer! Typically, white upper cabinets are paired with a darker color base cabinet.
  • Gray: Gray has been taking over the interior design world for the past several years - and kitchen cabinets are no exception. Whether you opt for a gray that’s barely there, a darker charcoal hue, or one with a hint of blue, it should be easy to find the cabinets of your dreams.
  • Natural woods: As the shift towards more industrial and raw looks makes its way into our homes, light, natural woods are a perfect choice. We’re talking about pine and oak that is minimally finished - no more dark stain. And they’re a perfect counterpoint to the cooler grays in whites in the rest of the finishes.

Feature trends

Modern Kitchens are there to keep you organized. Be on the lookout for cabinets with multi-purpose functions.

  • Extra deep drawers: Storing dishware, tupperware and even crockpots in extra-deep drawers is a great option for those with open shelving.
  • Multi-Purpose Kitchen Island with Storage: No longer just extra prep space, the new kitchen islands are larger and more useful than ever. With seating, storage, outlets and more, your island can become the hang-out spot for family and friends.
  • Minimal hardware: While the true minimalists have opted to ditch hardware all-together, there is a middle ground. Sleek nickel handles are replacing circular knobs to coordinate with the clean lines of shaker cabinets.

There’s a whole lot changing in the world of kitchen design and that’s great news! There are more options than ever before to help you build a kitchen that looks and functions like a dream.
