For example, round area rugs fit nicely under round tables, while rectangular rugs fit beautifully under rectangular tables. No matter which rug shape you select, it’s best to make sure that all of the legs of your table are sitting on top of the rug. This is not only to protect your floors but also to prevent chairs from catching on the rug’s edges. In most cases, your new area rug should be at least 24 inches to 30 inches out from all sides of the table, but no more than 36 inches. This allows all of the dining chairs to rest safely on a flat surface, even when your guests move them back to get up from the table. If you have an extendable dining room table, remember to take this into account. In this case, choose a rug size that works for whenever your table is fully extended, just to be safe.   If you’re having trouble deciding which size will work best, here’s an easy trick. Take one of your chairs and pull it out from your table, then use some painter’s tape to measure where the back legs are sitting.
